{"id":1479,"date":"2026-07-24T10:27:39","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T10:27:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lopezdeheredia.destinoexterior.net\/the-vineyards\/tondonia-vineyard\/a-tour-of-vina-tondonia\/"},"modified":"2026-08-01T20:38:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T20:38:20","slug":"a-tour-of-vina-tondonia","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lopezdeheredia.destinoexterior.net\/en\/the-vineyards\/vina-tondonia\/a-tour-of-vina-tondonia\/","title":{"rendered":"A Tour of Vi\u00f1a Tondonia"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-page\" data-elementor-id=\"1479\" class=\"elementor elementor-1479 elementor-904\" data-elementor-post-type=\"page\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5867d18b e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"5867d18b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" id=\"main-box-content\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-75ade182 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"75ade182\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h1>A Tour of Vi\u00f1a Tondonia<\/h1>\n<p>As with all wines produced by the bodega at the time (Vi\u00f1a Zaconia, Vi\u00f1a Medokkia and Vi\u00f1a Bosconia), Don Rafael L\u00f3pez de Heredia named Vi\u00f1a Tondonia after the old term for this large meander on the River Ebro in which it is situated, Tondon (from Latin retondo).\u00a0 The proximity of the Vi\u00f1a Tondonia estate invites the visitor to stroll down the old mediaeval road that led to the Basque Country from La Rioja, crossing the Bri\u00f1as Bridge.\u00a0 Vi\u00f1a Tondonia is in fact a group of vineyards belonging to the bodega, located in the meander of River Ebro, that were bought and amalgamated by our founder.\u00a0 If you should visit this area, we recommend the following route (1-2 hours on foot).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lopezdeheredia.destinoexterior.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gsendero.jpg\" alt=\"perfil\" width=\"518\" height=\"101\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before arriving at the bridge, you come across the\u00a0<em>Pante\u00f3n de los Liberales<\/em>\u00a0cross commemorating the death of 7 people in the fight against Carlistas (challengers to Isabel II\u2019s throne) on the 13th of March 1834. This monument was initially erected here, then moved to Florida Avenue in Haro, and finally moved back here. The Bri\u00f1as Bridge had a hermitage on the right dedicated to\u00a0<em>Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Puente del Ebro<\/em>\u00a0(Our Lady of the Ebro Bridge). Later, a field toll hut or\u00a0<em>pago de la cadena<\/em>, was established, obliging travellers to pay a toll for themselves and their goods before crossing the bridge. The bridge still maintains its Gothic form, although it has been rebuilt many times.\u00a0 Due to its importance in linking the two river banks, construction costs were contributed by villages both far and near.<\/p>\n<p>The way to Tondonia continues on the right bank of the river, under the hill where the so-called Bri\u00f1as Castle used to be.\u00a0 This land was auctioned by the Haro Town Council in 1927, but Don Rafael, the only bidder, wasn\u2019t able to buy it due to administrative problems.\u00a0 Following the road you come across a path leading up a hill called Perdig\u00f3n where there is a typical vineyard guard hut, and next to it you can see various rock-hewn tombs. In the area many archaeological remains have been found due to movement of soil since 1911 \u2013 we have kept many photographs and references.\u00a0 Descending the path you should notice a vertical niche in the stone wall. From here you head towards the Piedra Redonda (round stone), and then take the left path to return to the CarraBri\u00f1as track which runs parallel to the River Ebro.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lopezdeheredia.destinoexterior.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/fmeandro.jpg\" alt=\"plano tondonia\" width=\"515\" height=\"357\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Continuing on this route, and gazing at the riverside village of Bri\u00f1as, you should notice the variety of vegetation and crops, from black poplar plantations to hills covered in vines. These vines first began to be planted in our property in 1913. Following the river\u2019s meander you get to the San Roman district, which was once deserted, but where we are currently building a shed for use by agricultural workers.\u00a0\u00a0 Opposite this the<em>\u00a0Molino de Suso<\/em>\u00a0(Suso mill) and one of the first electrical power stations to service the surrounding villages, once stood.<\/p>\n<p>The path follows the river, and at the first turning to the right, after a gentle uphill you reach the\u00a0<em>Castillo de Vi\u00f1a Tondonia<\/em>, the founder\u2019s dream project. Following the path you get a view of Haro, and from the top there are magnificent views of the\u00a0<em>Sierra de la Demanda<\/em>\u00a0(Demanda mountain range) the\u00a0<em>Montes Obarenes<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Conchas de Haro<\/em>, and whole\u00a0<em>Sierra de Cantabr\u00eda<\/em>\u00a0(Cantabria range). To the south, you can see\u00a0 the Pancrudos and Serradero ranges and the Iregua River basin.<\/p>\n<p>Descending to the left you soon reach the\u00a0<em>Caseta Ugalde<\/em>, where there is a fountain built by Don Rafael L\u00f3pez de Heredia Aransaez.\u00a0 You then continue towards Haro until there is a fork to the right that takes you to a vineyard where a clear path passes next to a stone wall.\u00a0 Following this path, you leave the Perdig\u00f3n hut to your right, reach a clump of pine trees where a path to the left takes you back to the initial mediaeval road, and you\u2019ll soon be able to distinguish the shape of the bodega.<\/p>\n<p>This route offers the visitor a range of different types of crops \u2013 predominantly vines, both with traditional gobelet and modern trellis pruning systems. \u00a0There are also fields with cereals that will be replanted with vines in the future, and black poplars. A characteristic that enables the visitor to distinguish the vineyards of R.
